Perspective on how students learn (Tuesday 6/29)

The Question: What does Mike Wesch believe about how students learn?  How does he act on those beliefs? Mike Wesch believes that student learn when their investment in their learning is rooted in personal interests. Further, he believes that students learn through being challenged and solving these challenges. For Wesch, learning is an activation of the skills needed to foster the confidence to "keep loving ourselves when we fall and [know] that one of these days we will make it" (Wesch). He acts on his beliefs of how students learn by finding out what truly drives his students and proceeding to create learning environments that embrace and center student passions . Wesch works to make learning in his classroom purposeful. Through his Ted Talk, Mike Wesch works to define learning for his students as, "Living inside of learning. Doing something they love. Who is a Digital Native? (Monday 6/28)

What is a Digital Native? Who is a Digital Native?  Does this framing make sense? Does it aid understanding of todays world or does it harm the reality of today's youth? The Question: What do you make of the (divergent) positions of Boyd and Prensky? Where do you stand on the “digital native” terminology? Prensky: Prensky believes that based that age determines experience and proficiency with technology. He characterizes individuals from older generations as "Digital Immigrants" and individuals from recent generations as "Digital Natives." For his time, Prensky brought into discussion what it means to grow up in a technologically advanced world and how this impacts development, thought process, productivity and communication.  Boyd:  Boyd unpacks and writes in conversation with Prensky's thinking. Me! Hi! Welcome. Here is a small bit about me: I am Emily Keith. I will briefly walk through the recent steps that I took to get here.  I am a 2020 graduate of Providence College.  In my undergraduate  time at Providence College I studied Studio Art and graduated with concentrations in Digital Imaging and Painting. I was involved as many leadership opportunities  that helped others as I could be!  I am a Teach For America (TFA) 2020 corps member I knew I wanted to help others and be a part of change :)  I became a 1st Grade classroom teacher at Achievement First Iluminar ES I found the people whose lives I am passionate about helping! I started graduate classes at RIC I started my RIC journey through TFA, and now have decided to finish them on my own!  I joined CURR 501: Digital Media Literacy And here I am!
